I live in Surrey, BC, a beautiful and vibrant city in the Lower Mainland. Surrey is not perfect, but if you have lived in other parts of the world, you may fall in love with Surrey: yes, it has some problematic areas, but is one of the cities with more parks I’ve seen, and it has access to beaches, lakes, other cities, islands…you name it!

Also, Surrey is changing. And if you want to make the best from the place you live, the first step is to know it better.

If you are new to Canada, new to this region or are planning to establish here, this is a mini-guide of what to do and where to go. It is not exhaustive, but may help you to start your journey and get an idea of what is going on and how you too can help!

Live in Surrey, White Rock or Langley? New to the community? Do you want to know what to do to keep you and your family busy and healthy while not investing too much money?

Here are some ideas:

  • Get a free library card: Surrey has nine different libraries, with a library card, you can get books from any location and drop them at any location. You can also browse for books online and ask them to bring the copy to the library closer to your location, so it is ready when you go there!. Check library locations here.
  • Buy a monthly bus pass. It allows you to save money and travel anywhere in Surrey, South Surrey, Langley, Delta and White Rock. You can use it on weekends to go to other places without paying extra.
  • Visit the Leisure Guide online or grab a copy at any Recreational Centre or Library, they offer all types of courses and activities for all age groups.
  • Become familiar with local farms and farm markets, know where your food comes from
  • Become involved with local activity by attending movies and events:
    • Movies at Surrey Libraries
    • Movies at South Surrey
    • Social Justice Series at the Library
    • Surrey Community Summit (April 6):
    • Understand what’s happening in your city, what are the plans and programs:
    • Sustainability & Energy in Surrey, BC
    • Emergency Preparedness
    • City Beautification:
    • Visit places:
      • Parks in Surrey area, they are free, the parking is free and most of them are accessible by bike or public transportation. Bring your family for a picnic at the park, take pictures and create memories, doesn’t cost a cent!
      • Parks in South Surrey, same as above
      • Historic Stewart Farm, a great place to see how people lived 100 years ago, great landscape and a good place for a picnic and a hike
      • Surrey Museum has many exhibits and the area around (Cloverdale) is full with antique shops and an old (still functioning) cinema:  and the Clova cinema
      • White Rock, beautiful small coastal city with many restaurants and cafes and a long beach to walk and enjoy a picnic with the family.
      • Crescent Beach, beautiful walkways and small cafes and fish and chip shops.
      • Fort Langley, for those who like the antique
      • Steveston, for a good salmon or some coffee, excellent to buy fresh fish.
      • Van Dusen Gardens, completely sustainable and self-suficient, the gardens are awesome, they offer membership to visita ll year round and courses.
      • UBC Botanical Gardens, similar to the Van Dusen.
      • Vancouver Parks: Stanley Park, rent a bike or just walk. Excellent for picnics and even taking a swim at the public pool.
      • Lonsdale Quay Market, take the sea bus (using the same bus ticket you bought to go to Vancouver) and visit the market, great to but special foods, have a lunch with the family and enjoy a sunny day.
      • Granville Island, a great place to spend the day, get there in one of the boats from the Science Museum harbour at Main Street Skytrain station.
      • Take a long weekend vacation to one of the Gulf Islands (Mayne , Galiano , Salt Spring Island , Pender, Gabriola, etc)….each one is different and has something to offer. If you love nature and small towns, if you want to enjoy a good mini vacation renting a cabin or camping, the Gulf Islands are the perfect place to go
      • Visit Vancouver Island: Victoria , Tofino , Nanaimo…or stay longer and go to the north…
