If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?

The forest has shrunk
And fear has expanded,
The forests have dwindled,
There are less animals now,
less courage and less lightning,
less beauty
and the moon lies bare,
deflowered by force and
then abandoned
~ Visar Zhiti, The Condemned Apple: Selected Poetry

Today is a sad day: I came home to see dozens of trees disappearing from our Bose Forest. When I opened my home’s door, I saw the sadness and disillusionment in my 12-year-old’s eyes. He came to me and said: “Mom, they cut the trees… they are all down”

Just a month ago (August 1) we went there to protest. He helped me to write the signs and we stayed there for more than one hour.

What saddens me is that Surrey says that “the future lives here”…I wonder whose future…what future?

Today, about 50 old trees died and other 150 are already condemned, and with them, all the beauty and wisdom of birds, squirrels, hares, racoons and hundreds of other species who called that forest “home”. Yesterday, my son called me to tell me he saw a hare dying in the street.

The ignorance, arrogance and rapacity of one “developer” slashed life that took years to form, in a second. He and his crew ignore that trees are not only home for wildlife: their roots retain soil from erosion and water from running off, their leaves create a whole microclimate, making the clouds so it can rain, they make oxygen for us to breath, they create and support life…and they are terribly beautiful and vulnerable.

I’m sad, but I am also angry: that August 1 we were a bunch of concerned neighbours protesting (about 40-50)…where were all the other neighbours and their children? Where were the ones who sign petitions and click and post pictures about Nature destruction in their Facebooks accounts?

Where was everybody?

Ah! They were “busy”: it is more important to drive your children to soccer or piano than protecting a forest and teaching them to respect what gives us life. Or they were making dinner or watching TV. Or they didn’t know…

Today is a sad day. I know bigger battles are being lost around the whole world. I know there are even more important losers right now in many regions of the planet. But all that knowledge doesn’t make this pain less painful and outrageous.

If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
Anybody hear the forest fall?

Cut and move on
Cut and move on
Take out trees
Take out wildlife at a rate of species every single day
Take out people who’ve lived with this for 100,000 years –
Inject a billion burgers worth of beef –
Grain eaters – methane dispensers.

Through thinning ozone,
Waves fall on wrinkled earth –
Gravity, light, ancient refuse of stars,
Speak of a drowning –
But this, this is something other.
Busy monster eats dark holes in the spirit world
Where wild things have to go
To disappear

If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
Anybody hear the forest fall?”
